We have invited Fr. Steven McMichael to preach our Novena. Steven J. McMichael, OFM Conv., is a member of the Province of Our Lady of Consolation and an Associate Professor in the Theology Department at the University of Saint Thomas (Saint Paul, Minnesota). He is currently researching and writing on the topic of the resurrection of Jesus in late medieval Franciscan theology, spirituality and preaching. He has just published a book entitled The Glory of Paradise: Risen Life in the Easter Octave Sermons of Bernardino da Siena (Tau Press, July, 2016). He continues to work on the medieval Easter sermons of Bernardino and Roberto da Lecce. His current book project is on Mary Magdalene as the principle resurrection witness to the Risen Christ in medieval Franciscan theology, spirituality, and art.

His interest in the Assumption of Mary comes from his research and writing on the sermons of Bernardino da Siena, a famous friar preacher on the fifteenth century. The papal document entitled The Most Bountiful God (Munificentissimus Deus), which established the Assumption of Mary as a dogma of faith in 1950, highlights Bernardino da Siena’s contribution to this Marian doctrine. Since Bernardino has been called “the Doctor of the Assumption”, this year’s Novena will focus on various aspects of what Bernardino taught about the Assumption of Mary.
